Canada, Mexico and the United States qualified automatically as co-hosts. Outside the hosts, FIFA's qualified-teams page lists eight direct qualifiers from Asia, nine from Africa, three additional direct qualifiers from Concacaf, six from South America, one from Oceania and 12 European group winners before the late play-offs were completed.
Asia sent eight direct qualifiers to the finals: Australia, IR Iran, Japan, Jordan, Korea Republic, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan. Iraq then added a ninth Asian finalist by beating Bolivia in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament final.
Africa put nine direct qualifiers straight into the finals: Algeria, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia. Congo DR missed one of those automatic places but kept its route alive, then beat Jamaica after extra time in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament final to take Africa's tenth place in the field.
Concacaf's final six looked different from every other confederation because three places already belonged to the hosts. Canada, Mexico and the United States were joined by Curaçao, Haiti and Panama through regional qualifying. South America sent Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay through the main CONMEBOL table. Oceania's direct place went to New Zealand, who beat New Caledonia 3-0 in the OFC qualifying final according to FIFA's qualified-teams page.
Europe supplied the largest bloc in the tournament with 16 teams. FIFA's official qualified-teams page had already confirmed Austria, Belgium, Croatia, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland. UEFA's official results page then added Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sweden, Türkiye and Czechia as the four play-off winners on March 31, 2026. For Italy, the damage went beyond one bad night: the Azzurri will now miss a third straight men's World Cup after also failing to qualify in 2018 and 2022.
The six playoff qualifiers were Congo DR, Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sweden, Türkiye and Czechia. Two came through FIFA's inter-confederation Play-Off Tournament in Mexico and four came through the UEFA play-offs.
